The Program of Practice
Local employers report a shortage of job-ready medical assistants with both clinical competence and real-world experience. Many adult learners face barriers such as limited time, need for immediate employment, and lack of access to hands-on training aligned with healthcare industry expectations.
The Response
Lodi Adult School implemented a Medical Assisting program that combines rigorous classroom instruction with structured, hands-on clinical preparation. The program is designed to accelerate skill development while aligning directly with employer needs, ensuring students are workforce-ready upon completion.
The Unique Features of the Program
A defining component of the program is its required externship: upon completion of class work, students participate in a 5-week (200-hour) externship consisting of full-time daytime hours. This immersive experience allows students to apply learned skills in real clinical settings, build professional confidence, and establish connections with potential employers.
The Outcome
Program outcomes demonstrate strong workforce alignment, with high completion rates and a significant percentage of students securing employment in healthcare settings shortly after program completion. Employer feedback highlights graduates’ readiness, professionalism, and ability to transition effectively into clinical roles.
